Synopsis

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Excerpt

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. “Not my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.”

“How did it happen?” I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.

She was coy. “The way it usually happens.”

“Did you make the first move?”

Another shrug. “Why not?”

I swear, a shrug and a “why not?” were the Spaniards’ go-to answer for everything.

“Well, then I guess it seems safe—and a little boring now—to tell you that I have a crush on someone.”

Her brows quirked up. “Other than Mateo?”

“What?”

“You are sleeping with Mateo, no?”

“WHAT?!”

“No?”

“No!” I exclaimed, appalled. “Why does everyone keep thinking that?”

“Because you are always together,” she said simply. She took a sip of wine. “The attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.”

“He’s married!”

“Yes, but you are not.”

I shook my head adamantly. “It’s wrong. I don’t want to be the other woman. I’ve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I can’t put Mateo’s daughter through that,” I said. “Or his wife,” I quickly added.

“That doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings for anyone else.”

“Yes, it does mean that.”

“Maybe you are meant to be together.”

“We’re not! There isn’t even a together. We’re just friends. I haven’t done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.”

Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. “If you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.”

She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.

“What do you mean, the way he looks at me?” I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.

She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. “You do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you like…like you’re his favorite food.”

“Favorite food?”

She lit her cigarette. “Yes. You’re like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.”

I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. That’s how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure that’s how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.

“And yes,” she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, “that is also how you look at him.” Great, a mind reader. “But you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.”

“There is nothing to know,” I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. “We are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.”

“A crush?” she questioned. “Vera, I think you’re in love with him.”

No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.

“You can’t fall in love in a week,” I told her heatedly.

“You can fall in love in a second,” she said with a snap of her fingers. “The heart has no regard for time.”

With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasn’t forbidden.

I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.

He was on the phone, smiling.

His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.

Holy fuck.

For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.

From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body I’d ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although David’s skin tone wasn’t as mesmerizing. Mateo’s color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.

And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.

I really, really wanted to believe her.

Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, “No, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didn’t injure myself.” He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.

He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldn’t come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasn’t what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.

“Vera!” I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phone’s receiver to his chest, grinning at me. “I need to ask you your question.”

“What?” I asked, hoping it was quick.

“Who is your favorite Spaniard here?”

Seriously?

And yet I couldn’t lie to him.

“You,” I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.

I grew up in Texas and moved to Florida when I met the love of my life 13 years ago. I wrote my first poem when I was five and it was about my love affair with pickles. I still love pickles but I like to think my writing has grown since then. I absolutely adore anything to do with books whether it’s writing them or devouring them in one sitting. Trace’s job has always revolved around death. Trace is a Watcher, aposition createdassist to the undead to their final resting place without alerting humans of the vampire race. After years of killing, he’s ready for a new job, a new life, or to just disappear. WhenBessina becomes his new target after she witnesses the death of fellow vampires Sam and Hope, Trace is ready toeliminate her—until a strange course of events turns the tables and has Trace protectingBessina from his boss and running for his life.

Trace could see countless emotions play across the girl’s heart-shaped face, but the one that immobilized him was the instant attraction he’d seen in her alarmed gaze. Though she tried to hide it with indifference, for some reason it had Trace rethinking his next move.

“Ready?” he asked, holding his hand out to her, effectively breaking the spell he’d held over her.

She held her shirt close to her chest and shook her head. “Look—”

Trace smiled as she tried to loosen the effects of the pain medicine.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, and as soon as Officer Flores comes back, I’m going to explain to her that you are some loon from the streets that’s trying to get me to join some Kool-Aid drinking cult and have her arrest your crazy butt.” She pointed her finger at him and opened her mouth to speak again.

Before she could, Trace moved. He had had every intention of taking the girl and doing the job that he’d been trained to do, but as soon as he looked into her cinnamon gaze, he closed the space between them and pulled her tightly into his arms. Her small, warm frame trembled.

“Shh… I am not going to hurt you.” He’d never said that to a person before, but to her, it felt so damned true. He hoped it was simply meant to calm her until his head was back on the job and he would actually be able to carry out his orders.

Her eyes sparkled with unshed tears as her spine stiffened and she glared up at him. “Yes, you are. That’s why you came.” Her lips trembled with fear.

Trace placed one open palm on her back and the other on her hip, locking her in place. “And why do you say that?” Shit, he was asking for trouble the longer her held her warm body.

He made the mistake of looking down into her odd cinnamon gaze. She was young, but he could tell that she’d been through some hard things and come out on top. He wondered what price she’d paid in order to escape what life had thrown at her.

Trace realized how unfair her situation was. The sadness in her eyes, the way she held herself, and the spunk that she had thrown at him earlier made him smile inwardly. She was a woman that deserved a second chance.

“Because you know what I saw,” Bessina admitted, finally realizing that there was no escaping him without help.

The resignation in her eyes angered Trace. He leaned in, and to his surprise, she didn’t pull away. “Hmm… I recall you telling me that you saw nothing.”

He was making a mistake. He never left loose ends. Never.

As the girl’s body melted into his embrace, Trace couldn’t help but lean closer to her scent. He gently placed his lips to her neck. Her soft gasp pulled him back into reality. He could never have her, and if he wanted to keep her safe, he’d have to get far away from her.

 “Just sit on
the bed and watch.” He grins but doesn’t get up. I quickly run into the
bathroom and strip of my shirt and pants. I have on a black and purple lace corset
and a black thong with a garter belt attached to fish nets. And to set it off
with a bang 6 inch spiked high heels. The purple goes great with my tattoo. I
lean forward head bent and brush my hair to give it the full volume look. You
know the just fucked look. I take a deep breath I have never done anything like
this before. I slowly open the bathroom door and step out. I hear him take a
sharp breath. His eyes have turned dark with desire and are watching my every
step. His muscles become rigid and hands gripping the edge of the bed. I let
him take in the outfit and then walk to the iPod and hit play. Giving him a
nice view of my ass.  Shush by Rachele Royal starts up. I walk right in
front of him and start singing the words while dancing erotically.
She’s singing about giving it to her good. I walk up
to him and place my hand on his shoulder and lean in to whisper while my knee
is placed on his erection. I put a little pressure on his bulge and she says
something about 3 in a row. I hold up three fingers and then rub them on top of
my panties. Then place them on his lips. He nips at my fingers.
He slowly takes one of my fingers in his mouth and sucks.  I turn and
bend over and rub my ass on his jeans, right over his dick. His body stills and
he growls. He reaches his hand from behind and rubs on my clit ,with a finger,
through my thong. I twist back around and grab his hand and stick that finger
in my mouth and gently suck down to his knuckle then back up to the top
swirling my tongue around his finger.  She sings about shushing and making
no noises so I hold his finger to my mouth shushing. I turn and sit on
his lap and I grind on him.
I feel his breath on my neck right before he leans
in and kisses it. Nibbling and sucking. He is driving me wild. I have to stand
up before I loose myself in him. I want to drive him wild not the other way
around. I turn and have my back to him I bend down and touch my ankles to give
him a nice view of my ass and slowly start to slide my hands up my legs and
begin to stand. I hear him growl and the next thing I know I’m lying face down
on the bed with him on top of me. He leans down and whispers in my ear. “You
drive me wild.” His hot breath on my neck and his erection pressing into my ass
is almost too much. He rips my thong right off my ass. Well he did buy
them.  He leans down and bites my ass and slaps right where he just bites.
“Fuck Neeko.” “That’s right say my name baby.”

He pulled himself up and sat back on his heels,
tracing his hands up to my rib cage and down my sides with the pads of his
fingertips. I shivered and smiled softly, but winced at the same time,
trying to squirm away from the pangs of pleasure and the ticklish
sensation he was awakening in me. “I enjoy touching you, Lily.”
He smiled.
He was watching my reactions, smiling
seductively at the effect he was having on me. The more aroused I became,
the less inhibited I felt. My passion was building for him, and I wanted
more than this.
My hands explored his beautiful, strong, hard
body, and he shivered when I hit an erogenous zone just under his ribs on
the side.
When I did this, a loud groan escaped.
“Fuck, you’re driving me crazy.  I want you, so much.” His voice
was shaky and he threw his head back when I kept stroking his body.

Lily’s back on her home turf in London for Christmas, after a turbulent term, studying music in Miami. She wonders if her relationship with Will can survive their stupidity and what this means for their music collaboration. Lily realises all too late, that she’s fallen hard for Alfie despite his declaration to her that he can’t love her. This has left Lily devastated, knowing that the man she loves will never feel the same for her. Meanwhile, Alfie has continued his relentless pursuit of Lily to take what he wants from her, testing her resolve not to continue their relationship. She had found the strength to resist all of his advances, until the night before she flew home. After giving herself one last night with him, she fled across the Atlantic, thinking time and distance with family and friends would help heal her broken heart. What Lily never expected, was for her traumatic love life to follow her, both to London and Miami through the chapters of her life, during the following year. Her music career and studies improve tremendously though, fuelling her performance and personal identity, but her love life is as complex as ever. Alfie makes some disclosures which could be game changers for the both of them, and asks for her trust and time. Lily wonders if she should trust him, asking herself if Alfie could ever be, everything she needs?

Alfie was tentative at first, dancing in a
restrained way. We’d danced together at Christmas so I knew how flirty he could
get on the dance floor. I decided to take the initiative and grabbed his hips
as we swayed together in time with the music.
He began to lose himself in the dance and found
his natural rhythm, his hands moving over my body…

BOOK 3
Lily’s is moving forward after her break up with Alfie. Her journey continues through some extremely emotional times during key events, as she becomes more self- assured and begins to develop as an performing artist. It isn’t easy for Lily to forget Alfie because of circumstances with Alfie’s life. However, Lily is tortured by constant reminders of their time together, and this does little for her resolve to move on.

Although, Lily has made her choice, it is also tinged with sadness. Her love for Alfie remains strong, and she fights a constant internal battle, between loving him and loving her music. Lily thinks it’s impossible to have both. A fabulous opportunity arises for Lily, but there is a possibility of this bringing her face to face with Alfie again. Can Lily cope with the emotional turmoil this would bring her? Or, is the risk of seeing Alfie something she feels able to manage now?

Musically, Lily concentrates her efforts much more, which brings success, post Alfie. Through this, she finds friends in some of the most unlikely of circumstances. All of her friends continue to protect her, and are all well aware of the impact Lily’s relationship with Alfie has had on her. All apart from Elle, who gives Lily food for thought. Although, Lily’s mind is still plagued with memories of Alfie, which continues to impact on her to such an extent, Lily has been unable to form new romantic ties. Professionally, her relationships couldn’t be better. She is offered some amazing opportunities rarely available, and is determined to do make the most of them. This is especially important to her, given the sacrifices she has made in the past to do this.

Will Lily’s music be enough for her, and prove to be everything she ever wanted?

His strong arms held me tightly, like he might never get the chance to do this again. The front of his hard body came flush with mine. I could feel he was aroused as he tilted his hips into mine. My body went stiff, and I fought with everything I had inside me to resist him, but I still craved the closeness with him.

Alfie let out a shuddery breath and kissed the skin on my neck before drawing his nose the length of it and letting me go. In my head I was telling myself to get out of there before something happened between us.  Because if it did… I knew I’d be lost to him all over again.

I have lived my
whole life with comments from both, relative strangers and close friends
telling me I should write a book. People continually tell me I have an ability
to tell a story and make even the mundane sound interesting. (I’m personally
not aware of that.)
The thought of
doing this, was something I never thought I would entertain, because being
dyslexic, during my childhood and adolescence, I found it very difficult to get
past how to spell something, never mind how coherent the sentence sounded. So
writing a few paragraphs usually made me sweat.
As a child I
discovered coping strategies and developed my own ways of getting by, I wasn’t
stupid by any stretch of the imagination, but left school at fifteen without
any academic qualifications. I wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until I attended
university at the age of thirty.
(Both of my
children were diagnosed with dyslexia, one at the age of seven and one much
later, although, I could see my traits present in him, and both have excelled
academically in their chosen professions.
Thanks to the
invention of the computer and information technology, my world changed. I
learned how to communicate in written form effectively, not afraid to use
language present in my oral skills that were lacking in my written work, for
fear of spelling them wrongly, which gave me the confidence to write the books.
Had I, had to write a book on paper, I know I would never have finished the
first page.
I recently
discovered the joy of writing after a challenge by a friend, which turned into
three books. As I am constantly challenging others to face their demons, I
decided, after some persuasion, to brave it out and share the books with
others. I don’t have any expectations for them other than to tell the
story.
This was a huge
step for me, and took courage because there are so many fabulous clever people
out there, writing amazing pieces of work that sadly, very few people ever
see.
My work:
I have had the pleasure (and the drama) of working in The National Health
Service and in an independent capacity for Social Services in the UK for many
years. My work has been supporting many women, children, young people, and
families during this time. Sometimes, this has been at some of the toughest or
most vulnerable times in their lives.
During this
time I have observed the communications of all parties involved both, in their
relationships with others and how their decisions affect the subsequent
outcomes for them and others. I have shared in the births and in the deaths of
some of these people, and I never take advantage of the privilege my position
brings me.
People ask what
does the K.L. stand for K.L. Shandwick is a pseudonym. This isn’t to ‘hide’
behind, (I am not ashamed of what I’ve written), but to afford my clients the
appropriate level of confidentiality by association. So, K L stands for KL. I
am an independent author, who presently self publishes through kindle, but I
hope to have a print copy of my books shortly.
